Energy
The Energy Practice of BOYANOV & Co. is one of the busiest departments of the firm. Their active involvement in the energy field started as of the very inception of the liberalisation process in this sector. Therefore, the firm’s history of engagements reflects the history of the liberalized energy market in Bulgaria.

BOYANOV & Co. has advised the Bulgarian Government in relation to the first attempts to structure the strategic Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline project back in 1994, and Westinghouse in relation to the long-term process of rehabilitation of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant since 1998.

It all started with the opening of the process of privatisation of some of the largest power generation facilities and the electricity distribution sector in Bulgaria in the period 2000-2007. The firm was involved in some of the major deals in that period, including the strategic projects for construction of new and the rehabilitation of existing lignite coal-burning power plants (advising Enel) and the privatization of the electricity distribution network (advising the Bulgarian Government) as well as the privatization of hydropower plants, district heating plants, and other generation facilities (advising International Power Ltd and a number of other foreign investors).

The Energy Practice of the firm currently covers all areas that focus the interest of investors and government, among which:

Renewable energy generation facilities
The firm has an excellent track record in advising on a large number of wind and photovoltaic energy projects for Spanish, Danish, Italian, Belgian, and other foreign players, including due diligence and acquisition of projects, structuring of joint-development agreements, working on project development, etc.;

Large energy infrastructure projects
The firm is uniquely positioned, having recently advised on the final stages of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline project development and on the structuring of the NABUCCO gas pipeline project as well as on a number of other initiatives for regional gas transmission projects;

Nuclear energy
The firm has repeatedly advised international players on attempts to structure innovative transactions involving the operation and management of the existing Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant and closely follows the evolution of the complicated Belene project for the construction of a new nuclear generation facility; and

Emission Allowances Trading
The firm has advised large international players on the Bulgarian legal framework of this sector, which currently attracts active interest.

Natural Resources
The firm has extensive experience in advising clients on natural resources projects.
Since 1995, we have worked for some of the major players in the local mining industry advising on corporate, commercial and regulatory issues related to their business, including, among others, a green-field project for the construction and operation of a floatation factory, procedures for awarding of exploration permits and extraction concessions, expansion of existing concessions.

We have advised on various oil & gas exploration and extraction projects, including on the single operating local natural gas deposit. Other aspects of our expertise include advising clients in the fields of construction materials, gravel and sand deposit exploitation, mineral water concessions, and others.
